Why you quit LeetCode after 6 days — the science
You know the cycle. Sunday night: new Notion board, a 90-day plan, three problems solved before midnight. Wednesday: two more, slightly annoyed. Saturday: you open LeetCode, look at a Medium, and close the tab. The plan dies quietly, and four months later a job posting resurrects it.
Here's the thing nobody tells you: this isn't a character flaw. It's a completely predictable interaction between how motivation works and how you designed your plan. You designed it wrong — because everyone does the first time.
Motivation is a spike, not a resource
The motivation you felt on day 1 was an emotional spike — triggered by a job post, a rejection, a friend's offer letter. Spikes decay. Research on habit formation consistently shows that reliance on felt motivation predicts abandonment, because the feeling has a half-life measured in days while the plan assumes it's a constant.
Day 6 is roughly where the decayed spike crosses below the effort your plan demands. If your plan needs 'three problems and full focus' to count as success, day 6 you — tired, busy, unmotivated — fails by definition. And a plan you failed yesterday is much easier to abandon today. Psychologists call this the abstinence violation effect: one miss reads as proof the whole project failed, so why continue?
What the research actually says works
Implementation intentions. In Gollwitzer's meta-analyses, people who decided in advance exactly when and where they'd act ('after dinner, at my desk, 9pm') followed through at dramatically higher rates than people with identical goals and no plan. The decision is pre-made, so day-6 you doesn't have to make it with a depleted battery.
Tiny minimums. The unit of success has to fit your worst day, not your best one. One problem — even one attempted problem — keeps the chain alive. Consistency compounds; intensity doesn't survive a bad week. BJ Fogg's behavior-design work is blunt about this: make the behavior small enough that motivation is almost irrelevant.
Loss aversion. Kahneman and Tversky showed losses feel roughly twice as heavy as equivalent gains. A streak converts your consistency into a thing you own — and once you own it, skipping a day stops being 'no gain' and becomes a loss. This is the single mechanic that keeps Duolingo users showing up for years, and it works just as well for algorithms as for French.
Visible progress on a finite map. Open-ended goals ('get good at DSA') give your brain nothing to close. A bounded map of ~20 patterns that visibly fills in exploits the Zeigarnik effect — incomplete structures nag at you — and turns 'infinite grind' into 'finish the map.'
Design for day 6, not day 1
So the fix isn't 'be more disciplined.' It's structural: commit to a time and trigger while motivation is high; set the daily minimum embarrassingly low; make your streak something you'd hate to lose but insure it against one bad day; and put your progress on a map you can see filling in.
